Algoma University (Algoma U) was established in 1965 and is the smallest undergraduate-only university in Ontario. Located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, this post-secondary institution has a particular focus on the needs of Northern Ontario. Algoma University Awards of Excellence
Algoma U Awards of Excellence are available to all Canadian citizen secondary-school graduates who have completed all their qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing university studies at Algoma University. Canadian citizen International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Diploma recipients are equally considered for Awards of Excellence.
To qualify, candidates must be entering into their first undergraduate program and enrol in and maintain 30 credits over 2 consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study. Awards are based on the average of the 6 best, U or M final grades presented for admission. Algoma U Awards of Excellence are renewable if candidates maintain an average of 80% each academic year on 30 credits taken in two consecutive terms (fall/winter).
The Algoma U Awards of Excellence are available as follows:
Platinum: An entrance award of $3,000, renewable for up to three additional years, to all candidates presenting an entrance average of 90% or greater. Maximum value: $12,000
Gold: An entrance award of $2,500, renewable for up to three additional years, to all candidates presenting an entrance average of 85-89.9%. Maximum value: $10,000
Silver: An entrance award of $1,500, renewable for up to three additional years, to all candidates presenting an entrance average of 80-84.9%. Maximum value: $6,000
Algoma U Diploma Recognition Award of Excellence
Algoma U Diploma Recognition Awards of Excellence are available to students applying for a degree-completion program under an articulation agreement, after earning a 2- or 3- year diploma from an Ontario community college. Only those Algoma U students who are enrolled in and maintain 30 credits or more over two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study are eligible. Awards are decided using the overall average obtained by the candidate on completion of the college diploma. These awards are non-renewable.
The Algoma U Diploma Recognition Awards of Excellence are as follows:
Level I – An entrance award of $1,000 to candidates presenting an average of 3.70 – 4.00
Level II – An entrance award of $750 to candidates presenting an average of 3.00 – 3.69
Level III – An entrance award of $500 to candidates presenting an average of 2.50 – 2.99
Carl J. Sanders Scholarship
This $3,500 scholarship, renewable for up to three additional years, is available to the secondary school graduate who has completed all of his or her qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing university studies at Algoma U, and who presents the second-highest average over 90% on the 6 best, U or M courses presented for admission. The candidate must enrol in and maintain 30 credits over two consecutive terms of study at Algoma U.
The Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie Admission Scholarship I
An annual grant provides scholarships of $2,000, renewable for up to three additional years, to each of the top graduates from each of the secondary schools in Sault Ste Marie enrolling in 30 credits over two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of studies at Algoma U. Candidates must be residents of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and have completed all their qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing studies at Algoma U, and present an average of 80% on the 6 best, U or M courses presented for admission.
Edward & Frank McGrath Award of Excellence
This $3,750 scholarship, renewable for up to three additional years, is available to the secondary school graduate who has completed all his or her qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing university studies at Algoma U and who presents the highest average over 90% on the 6 best, U or M courses presented for admission. The candidate must enrol in and maintain 30 credits over 2 consecutive terms of study (fall/winter) at Algoma U.
The Lions Club of St. Joseph Island Scholarship
The Lions Club of St. Joseph Island Scholarship will provide an annual award of up to $500 to a full time student in their first year of Full-time studies at Algoma University, who has graduated from Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS) and is a resident of St. Joseph Island, Ontario. This award is non-renewable.
Peggy and Willmont MacDonnell Scholarship
This $3,000 scholarship, renewable for up to three additional years, is available to the secondary school graduate who has completed all his or her qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing university studies at Algoma U and who presents the third-highest average over 90% on the 6 best U or M courses presented for admission. The candidate must enrol in and maintain 30 credits over 2 consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study.
The Sardar, Rajwant, Paul and Anita Sohi Family Scholarship
The Sardar, Rajwant, Paul and Anita Sohi Family Scholarship will provide two scholarships valued at a minimum of $1,250 each, to first year students who are: 1st Generation students and are First Nations, Metis, or Inuit. Preference will be given to students enrolled in either a math, science or engineering program. To be eligible the candidate(s) must be enrolled in full-time studies at Algoma University, with a course load of 30 credits over two consecutive terms of (fall/winter) study. He/she must have a minimum average of 70% in their first term. This award in non-renewable.

Chancellor’s Award: $5,000 Renewable
The Chancellor’s Award is a scholarship valued at $5000 annually for international students entering their first year of study at Algoma University. To qualify, candidates must be studying on a full-time basis (30 credits over two consecutive terms of study). Students must complete all their qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing studies in any program of study at Algoma University.
President’s Award: $2,500 Non-Renewable
The President’s Award is an entrance scholarship valued at $2500 for international students entering their first year of study at Algoma University. To qualify, candidates must be studying on a full-time basis (30 credits over two consecutive terms of study). Students must complete all their qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing studies in any program of study at Algoma University.
Dean’s Award: $1,000 Non-Renewable
The Dean’s Award is an entrance scholarship valued at $1000 for international students entering their first year of study at Algoma University. To qualify, candidates must be studying on a full-time basis (30 credits over two consecutive terms of study). Students must complete all their qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing studies in any program of study at Algoma University.
Award of Excellence: $500 Non-Renewable
The Award of Excellence is an entrance scholarship valued at $500 for international students entering their first year of study at Algoma University. To qualify, candidates must be studying on a full-time basis (30 credits over two consecutive terms of study). Students must complete all their qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing studies in any program of study at Algoma University.
Note: All Applicants must be an international student, this is, a student who has received a temporary resident visa as a member of the student class under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada on the first day of classes. U.S. residents are not eligible for the scholarship.
